Training is paramount to the mission of the Hershey lab. In addition to emphasizing sound scientific practices, we strive to train scientists that can perform impactful research by infusing creativity into the scientific method. Each trainee starts with a narrowly defined set of experiments that is used as a starting point for developing a broader question. David’s role is to help everyone realize their research vision (not the other way around). As part of this process, trainees learn to excite others with their findings by developing strong written, oral and visual communication skills. Our emphasis on training positions everyone for success in a variety of career trajectories when they move on.

We prioritize a healthy lab culture. The lab is where we work and is not our entire life. Members are intimately familiar with the work of others in the lab. We collaborate with each other. We review each other’s manuscripts and proposals. We like each other. We strive to create a safe, inclusive and equitable environment that allows each individual to thrive as their whole, true self. David devotes considerable effort to using mentoring strategies that are tailored to each individual’s identity.
